Part-I (Objective Type) examination

Eligibility snapshot

Education Passed Madhyamik examination of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education or its equivalent
Computer & typing Elementary knowledge of computer operation with typing ability of 20 words per minute in English or 10 words per minute in Bengali. Candidates must exercise the option (English or Bengali) at the time of submitting the application.
Age limit Not below 18 years and not more than 45 years as on 01.01.2024 (born not earlier than 2 January 1979 and not later than 1 January 2006). Age as recorded in the Madhyamik or equivalent certificate only. The limit applies to all candidates, whether in Govt. service or not.
Age relaxation SC and ST candidates of West Bengal: 5 years. OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates of West Bengal: 3 years. PwBD: upper age limit relaxable up to 45 years. Ex-Servicemen with at least six months' continuous service in the Armed Forces: service period is deducted from actual age, and the resultant age must not exceed the maximum limit by more than 3 years. SC/ST/OBC candidates of other States get no relaxation and are treated as general candidates.
Nationality Citizen of India (natural or by registration), or another national declared eligible by the Govt. of India (certificate of eligibility required; offer of appointment only after the certificate is issued)
Language Ability to read, write and speak Bengali (not required for candidates whose mother tongue is Nepali). Knowledge of Bengali will be tested for candidates whose mother tongue is other than Bengali or Nepali.
Reservation benefit Available to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer) and EWS candidates of West Bengal only, PwBD (40% and above), Ex-Servicemen and Meritorious Sportspersons. SC/ST/OBC/EWS candidates of other States are treated as general candidates.

Selection process

The examination is held in two successive stages. A limited number of candidates qualifying in Part-I are allowed to appear in Part-II on a later date to be notified by the Commission.

Part-I (Objective Type)

Held at various centres in Kolkata and other districts of West Bengal. There is negative marking of 0.25 mark for each wrong MCQ answer.

Part-II (Conventional Type – Written)

For candidates who qualify in Part-I, on a date to be notified by the Commission.

Computer operation and typing test

Elementary knowledge of computer operation and typing ability are judged only after candidates qualify in Part-I and Part-II.

Final merit list

Prepared on the total marks obtained in Part-I and Part-II, provided the candidate has qualified in the computer operation and typing test. Candidates who qualify for Part-II but do not appear in it are not considered.

OBC candidates must pay the usual fee. No fee exemption is available to SC and ST candidates of other States. Fee is not refundable and will not be held in reserve for any other examination.

Written test centres

Part-I (preliminary) examination centres with code numbers. The Commission may allot an adjacent centre if it cannot accommodate a candidate at the centre opted for. Only ST candidates of Darjeeling district and other candidates of Darjeeling Sadar, Mirik and Kurseong sub-divisions may appear at the Darjeeling centre. All candidates from Kalimpong district may appear at the Kalimpong centre.

Category-wise Qualifying Marks
Aggregate of Part-I and Part-II marks taken together: UR: 40% EWS: 40% OBC: 38% SC: 35% ST: 30% PwBD: 30% Ex-Servicemen: 30% Meritorious Sports Person: 40% The Commission may further relax qualifying marks if a sizeable number of posts in reserved categories remain unfilled.

Good to know before you apply
Apply online only, once only Applications are accepted through the online mode only. Submitting more than one application is strictly forbidden and such applications are liable to cancellation.
Edit window Applicants can edit some fields once, between 28 Oct and 1 Nov 2026, by logging in at https://psc.wb.gov.in/. Take a printout of the form to spot errors. To change an address, update it in the Profile Section first and then use the Edit option.
Application is final No change in the application form and no claim for SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwBD/MSP/Ex-Servicemen status will be entertained after final submission.
Temporary appointment All appointments will initially be made on a temporary basis.
Posting options are mandatory Candidates must indicate preferences among (a) Secretariat Departments, (b) Directorates and (c) Regional Offices including District offices of one particular District or Kolkata. Vacancies are filled by merit position against the options exercised, subject to availability.
No mobile phones or gadgets Mobile phones, smart watches, Bluetooth and other communication devices are not allowed in the exam premises. Candidates will be frisked at entry, and violations can lead to a ban from this and future examinations.
Admit card and venue No candidate is allowed to take the examination without a valid admit card, and candidates will in no case be admitted to a venue other than the one on the admit card.
Medical examination and police verification Selected candidates must appear before a Medical Board and undergo police verification of antecedents before appointment.
Canvassing disqualifies Any attempt to enlist support for the application through persons, Government officials or agencies will disqualify the candidate.
Model answer objections After the Model Answers for MCQs are displayed on the Commission's website, objections must be filed strictly within the specified time limit.
Reservation Details
Benefits of reservation are admissible to: 1. SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates of West Bengal only 2. PwBD (40% and above) and Ex-Servicemen 3. Meritorious Sportspersons in International Competition, National Competition, Inter-University Tournament and National Sports/Games for School Education 4. EWS candidates of West Bengal only Sports covered: Athletics (including Track and Field events), Badminton, Basket Ball, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Swimming, Table Tennis, Volley Ball, Tennis, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Boxing, Cycling, Gymnastics, Judo, Rifle Shooting, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho and Archery Reservation of vacancies will be made as reported by the Govt. Reservation of PwBD (40% and above) will be determined vide Notification No. Labr/85-Emp/EC/1M-01/2025, dt. 25.05.2026
Provisions for PwBD Candidates
Candidates with Benchmark Disabilities who have a limitation in writing, including speed, may use a Scribe. PwBD candidates are requested to bring their own Scribe, who must have an educational qualification one step below that of the candidate. A certificate from the Chief Medical Officer / Medical Superintendent of a Government health care institution in the format of Appendix-I is required (not needed in the case of Blindness, Locomotor Disability with both arms affected, and cerebral palsy). Engagement of a scribe is not accepted after submission of the application. Candidates producing a valid Appendix-I are allowed compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour.
Tie-Breaking Principles
1. Preference to the candidate with higher aggregate marks in English and Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali 2. If still tied, preference to the candidate with higher marks in English 3. If still tied, preference to the candidate with higher age
Penalty for Disclosure of Identity
In Part-II (Conventional Type – Written), 10% of full marks will be deducted from the marks secured in a paper if the candidate writes their name or roll number, or puts any identifying mark in the answer script of that paper.
