Eligibility snapshot
Nationality
Citizen of India; or a subject of Nepal or Bhutan; or a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 Jan 1962 to settle permanently; or a person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam to settle permanently in India. Nepal, Bhutan, Tibetan and migrant categories need a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.
Educational qualification cut-off
Final result must have been published on or before 01.10.2026, with a valid mark-sheet / degree certificate as on that date. Qualification must be from a UGC-recognised Indian university or an AICTE-recognised institute.
Minimum marks
At least 60% marks in either of the degree examinations (at least 55% for SC/ST/PwBD candidates). Percentage is total marks obtained divided by aggregate maximum marks; fractions are ignored, so 59.99% counts as below 60%. For CGPA/OGPA, a conversion certificate from the University is needed.
Age
Minimum 21 years and maximum 30 years as on 01.10.2026, i.e. born between 02.10.1996 and 01.10.2005 (both dates inclusive).
Age relaxation
SC/ST: 5 years. OBC (Non-creamy layer): 3 years. PwBD: 10 years (Gen/EWS), 15 years (SC/ST), 13 years (OBC). Ex-Servicemen, Commissioned Officers including ECOs/SSCOs with at least 5 years' military service as on 01.10.2026 and released as per the rules: 5 years. Defence personnel disabled in operations during hostilities or in a disturbed area: 3 years. Existing confirmed employees of Public Sector General Insurance Companies (including GIC and Agriculture Insurance Company of India Ltd.): 8 years. Relaxation is cumulative if more than one applies, subject to a maximum age of 45 years.
OBC candidates
OBC candidates in the creamy layer are not entitled to OBC reservation or age relaxation and should apply as Un-Reserved (General).
Ex-Servicemen
There is no reservation for Ex-Servicemen in the Officer cadre; only age relaxation applies.
Selection process
Selection is based on a two-phase online examination followed by an interview. Candidates must secure the minimum qualifying marks in each test and section.

Phase I: Preliminary Examination (Online)
Objective MCQ test for 100 marks, 60 minutes, separately timed sections: English Language 30 questions (20 min), Reasoning Ability 35 questions (20 min), Quantitative Aptitude 35 questions (20 min). There is a penalty of one-fourth of the marks for each wrong answer. About 15 times the number of vacancies will be shortlisted for the Main Examination.

Phase II: Main Examination, Objective Test (Online)
250 marks, 3 hours. Generalists: Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, English Language and Computer Knowledge, 50 questions each. Specialists: the same five sections with 40 questions each, plus a 50-question test of technical and professional knowledge in the relevant discipline. There is a penalty of one-fourth of the marks for each wrong answer.

Phase II: Descriptive Test (Online, typed)
English Language descriptive test of 30 marks and 30 minutes: Essay 10, Précis 10, Comprehension 10. Answers are typed on the computer. Marks are not counted for shortlisting for the interview or final selection.

Interview
Candidates shortlisted on Main Examination (objective test) marks are called for an interview at select centres. Interview call letters are downloaded from the Company's website.

Final Merit List
Weightage is 80:20 for the Main Examination (objective test) and Interview. Ties are broken first by interview marks, then by date of birth (older candidate ranks higher). A waiting list not exceeding 50% of the vacancies may be prepared. Appointment is subject to medical fitness.

Written test centres
Phase I (provisional) centres are spread across all zones of India. In West Bengal they are Asansol, Burdwan, Durgapur, Hooghly, Kalyani, Kolkata and Siliguri. Provisional Phase II centres are listed below. The Company may cancel or add centres, or allot a different centre.

How to Apply
1. Keep ready your photograph, signature, left thumb impression and hand-written declaration (JPG/JPEG as specified), a valid personal email ID and mobile number, and your online payment details.
2. Go to https://nationalinsurance.nic.co.in/ and click APPLY ONLINE under the RECRUITMENT section.
3. Click "Click here for New Registration" and enter your name, contact details and email ID. Note down the Provisional Registration Number and Password (also sent by email and SMS).
4. Fill in the form. Use SAVE AND NEXT to save partial data, and VALIDATE YOUR DETAILS. Your name and your father's/husband's name must match your certificates, mark-sheets and ID proof.
5. Upload the photograph, signature, left thumb impression and hand-written declaration, and capture your live photograph by webcam or mobile (QR code).
6. Preview the whole form, then click COMPLETE REGISTRATION only after checking everything. No change is possible afterwards.
7. Pay the fee online. Wait for the confirmation and do not press Back or Refresh. If no e-Receipt is generated, the payment has failed and you must log in again and repeat it.
8. Take a printout of the e-Receipt and the application form containing the fee details.
Documents to Bring at Interview
Originals plus self-attested photocopies of:

Failure to produce the required documents means the candidate will not be allowed to appear for the interview. Candidates called for interview are entitled to sleeper class railway or bus fare by the shortest route, on production of travel proof.

Declaration text: "I, ______ (Name of the candidate), hereby declare that all information submitted by me in the application form is correct, true and valid. I will present the supporting documents as and when required." Visually impaired candidates who cannot write may type the declaration and put their left thumb impression below it. Scan at a minimum of 200 dpi in true colour. The application is not registered unless the photograph, signature, left thumb impression and declaration are all uploaded as specified.

Generalist posts (200): UR 80, OBC 55, SC 30, ST 15, EWS 20. Out of these, PwBD: a 1; b 3 + 1 backlog; c 2; d & e 2.
The Specialist Backlog Information Technology post (1) is for OBC.
Reservation is as per prevailing Government guidelines at the time the result is finalised.
EWS: family gross annual income below Rs. 8.00 lakh for FY 2025-26, with an Income and Asset Certificate issued after 31.03.2026. Persons whose family owns 5 acres or more of agricultural land, a residential flat of 1000 sq. ft. or more, a residential plot of 100 sq. yards or more in notified municipalities, or a residential plot of 200 sq. yards or more elsewhere are excluded. EWS vacancies are tentative and subject to Government directives and the outcome of any litigation.
PwBD, Scribe and Compensatory Time Guidelines
Only persons with at least 40% of a specified disability certified by the competent authority are eligible for PwBD reservation. The certificate must be issued on or before the last date of online application.
Disability conditions that are "likely to improve" do not qualify for reservation. A certificate that only says "temporary disability" must be replaced with one stating whether it is "likely to improve" or "progressive, non-progressive or not likely to improve".
Scribe: the candidate arranges one at their own cost. The scribe must not be a candidate in this recruitment or an employee of National Insurance Co. Ltd., and one scribe cannot serve more than one candidate. For Specialist disciplines, the scribe must be from a different academic stream. Both must give an undertaking. Request for a scribe or compensatory time must be indicated in the online application form.
Compensatory time: 20 minutes per hour of examination for scribe users, visually impaired candidates, category c candidates whose writing extremity is affected, and category d candidates with more than 40% disability.
Visually impaired candidates can view the test in magnified font.
Persons with less than 40% disability and difficulty in writing need a certificate in the Appendix-I format. The scribe's qualification must be one step below the candidate's, with details in the Appendix-II format.
Any candidate using a scribe in violation of these rules is disqualified and may be debarred.
Examination Day Instructions
Documents needed to enter: valid call letter, original photo ID bearing exactly the same name as on the call letter, and a photocopy of the ID.
Valid IDs: PAN Card, Passport, Permanent Driving Licence, Voter's Card, Bank Passbook with photograph, Aadhaar / e-Aadhaar, Employee ID, Bar Council ID, recent ID card from a recognised college or university, or photo ID issued by a Gazetted Officer or People's Representative on letterhead. Ration Card and Learner's Driving Licence are not accepted.
Candidates who changed their name after marriage must carry the original Gazette notification, marriage certificate or affidavit.
Candidates reporting after the time on the call letter are not allowed to take the examination.
Biometric data (thumb impression), iris scan and photograph are captured on the Phase II day. Wash off ink or mehndi from fingers beforehand and avoid contact lenses and eye makeup.
Not allowed in the centre: mobile phones, smart watches, calculators, Bluetooth devices, earphones, stationery or written material, wrist watches, metallic items, handbags, belts, caps, ornaments, opened or packed eatables, and any item usable for unfair means.
Candidates appear at the examination at their own risk and expense. Requests to change centre, date or session will not be entertained.
Good to know before you apply
Apply for ONE discipline only If a candidate submits multiple applications, only the latest valid (completed) application is retained and the fees paid for the others are forfeited.
Posting and transfer Selected candidates can be posted or transferred anywhere in India. The minimum stay at the initial place of posting is 5 years. Specialist Officers may be required to continue in the same specialization for a minimum of 10 years. Company Secretaries are primarily posted at Head Office, Kolkata.
Probation Probation is one year from joining, extendable twice by six months at a time. Officers must pass the non-life Licentiate Examination conducted by the Insurance Institute of India to be confirmed.
Service bond Selected candidates must serve for a minimum of four years including probation. On resigning earlier they must pay liquidated damages equal to one year's gross salary (proportionately reduced by service rendered). A stamped bond with two sureties (not blood relatives) for an amount equal to one year's gross salary is required. Candidates who resign or are terminated during probation must repay the gross salary received plus Rs. 25,000/- towards training cost.
Optional pre-examination training SC/ST/OBC (Non-creamy)/PwBD candidates can opt for online pre-examination training while applying. Candidates attend at their own cost, and attending gives no right to employment.
Government / PSU employees Candidates working in Government, quasi-Government, PSU, Nationalised Bank or financial institution jobs must inform their employer in writing and submit an undertaking while applying. A No Objection Certificate is needed at the interview, and a relieving letter at joining.
Keep email and mobile active Call letters and intimations are sent only to the email ID and mobile number registered in the application. No change of details is allowed after completing registration.
Apply early The Company is not responsible if candidates cannot submit their application by the last date due to heavy website load or any other reason.
